Vaccine Rollout

Since the start of the COVID-19 vaccine roll out in 2021, as of 01 March 2022, 17 million (42.74%) of the South African population have now been fully vaccinated with 30 431 individuals receiving the booster shot.

Since 23 February booster shots have been administered to 30 431 individuals and research has confirmed that individuals may choose to mix their vaccines, however one just has to be fully vaccinated with the one, then ask for the other as a booster, after either 60 or 90 days, depending on which you got first.

A few pills a day could now keep severe COVID away

As scientists continue to make more discoveries to combat COVID-19 South Africa's Health Regulator has authorised the use of Merck's COVID-19 treatment pill, Lagevrio (also known as molnupiravir), making it the first oral mechanism against COVID-19 to be approved in SA.

Molnupiravir was originally developed by pharmaceutical company Merck and previously received emergency approval for use in Covid patients in the US and UK, according to reporting by Bhekisisa and has proven that it can lessen the chances of someone ending up in the hospital from COVID-19.

According to reports on News24, A full course of 40 Merck’s molnupiravir tablets will retail at R7.50.

Government in plans to end state of disaster as it enters ‘new phase’ of pandemic

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced at the latest State of the Nation Address on 10 February that South Africa’s state of disaster will be lifted once other measures to regulate and manage the COVID-19 response are finalised, nearly all economic and social restrictions, and that the country was now entering a ‘new phase of the pandemic’. However, no specific date was given.
