COVID-19 Update | 31 January 2022

Vaccine Rollout

Since the start of the COVID-19 vaccine roll out in 2021, as of 30 January 2022, 16.4 million (41.3%) of the South African population have now been fully vaccinated.

This number has significantly risen indicating an uptake of vaccines administered amongst the South African population.

People from the ages of 12 can still get vaccinated at their nearest vaccination centres. Booster shots are now also available to individuals 60 days after their first J&J vaccine and 180 days after their second Pfizer vaccine.

COVID-19 Cases

As of 30 January, 3,346 new COVID-19 cases have been reported with the test positivity rate at 9.5% positivity rate.

As the country continues to see a drop in COVID-19 cases, the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and government are expected to discuss further adjustments to South Africa’s lockdown restrictions, it is up to us to continue adhering to all COVID-19 safety regulations.

Cabinet to announce end to rotational classes at schools

As the country’s, COVID-19 numbers continue to decline, and schools opened across the country, Cabinet is expected to announce the end of the rotational school learning system, which will allow the return of all pupils to classrooms.

Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said that the department was actually in favour of pupils going back to class full-time. This comes after the Department of Basic Education senior officials meeting with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC).

Currently, over 80% of South African schools are still operating on a rotational basis, where each child only attends school half of the time, on alternate days or weeks.
