Vaccine Rollout

Over the last month, the pace of South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccine roll-out has increased. According to the Daily Maverick, over five million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine with an average of 150 000 doses being administered per day on weekdays.

Why Are So Many People Who Have Had a Pfizer Vaccine Getting Infected?

Pfizer is a two-dose vaccination regime with data showing a 33% protection rate from getting infected after the first dose and 80% protection from hospitalisation. Once a second dose is received, protection against hospitalisation from the Delta strain increases to 94%.

Due to the lower protection rate after the first vaccine, the prevalence of the delta variant and that many people may be standing in queues as well as possibly lowering their adherence to protection guidelines, we have unfortunately seen many people infected in the first couple of weeks after their first vaccine.

It is important to remember, that the Pfizer vaccine only provides full immunity two weeks after the second dose.

A Focus on Mental Health

According to the World Health Organisation, “Fear, worry, and stress are normal responses to perceived or real threats, and at times when we are faced with uncertainty or the unknown. So it is normal and understandable that people are experiencing fear in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In addition to the fear of contracting the virus, we have all experienced a significant amount of change over the past year. From working from home and home-schooling our children to restricted movement to reduce contact with friends and family. These new realities have all had an impact on our mental well-being.

Henrietta Fore, the Executive Director of UNICEF states that “All over the world, children’s lives have been completely upended - the majority of them living in countries with some form of restricted movement or lockdown… [ and now needing to] understand and navigate this new landscape.

The impact of COVID-19 has had a major effect on our children with many not understanding what COVID-19 is and what actions they can take to keep safe. In order to assist parents, last year, the Inter-Agency Standing Committee produced a book to explain COVID-19 to children aged 6 – 11 years-old – My Hero is You. This year they have produced an additional resource to be used in conjunction with the book to guide conversations with children.
